State of Maryland Department of Insurance Requirements
  • Effective 10/01/09 All Resident licensees holding a major line of authority, with the exception of Title, will be required to complete 24 hours of continuing education including 3 hours in Ethics, before their license can be renewed every 2 years. Title producers will still have a 16-hour requirement.
  • All continuing education credits must be completed at least 1 day before the agents expiration date
  • Licensees must take CE courses that pertain to the lines of insurance they hold. L/H only licensee must take all of their credits in L/H courses, same for P/C only licensees. Licensees who hold multiple lines must take a total of 6 credits in each line (6 hours in L/H and 6 hours in P/C). The remaining credits may be taken in either category.
  • P/C producers need 24 hours CE including 3 hours of Ethics, every 2 year cycle.  FLOOD INSURANCE -All Maryland licensees authorized to sell flood insurance policies must complete 2 hours of flood every 2 years, which we do not offer at this time.
  • Title producers are expected to fulfill their CE requirements by taking title insurance CE courses.
  • Resident licensees who are selling long-term care insurance must earn 2 of their total CE hours by taking a long-term care course. This will count toward their L/H requirement.
  • Exams are non-monitored but closed book.
  • If a course is taken during 2 consecutive renewal cycles, there must be at least 6 months between the course.
  • Excess credit hours may not be carried forward.
  • Effective June 17, 2015 all course rosters will be submitted electronically via the Vertafore System.
  • If Resident Producer (Licensees) do not complete their 24 hours CE, Producers Have up to ONE-Year from the expiration date to complete their missing CE hours and pay the $100 late renewal

** Note: Effective October 1, 2013 an insurance producer may obtain all or part of the credit hours of continuing education required for renewal of a license from correspondence or online courses approved by the Commissioner.**
